RICHARDSON SMITH ARCHITECTS

Juliet Richardson and Terence Smith began working together while they were students at Princeton University in the late 1970s. During the ensuing 40 years they have developed a unique working partnership that benefits from both their shared vision as well as their individual interests and aesthetic sensibilities. The success of their practice today is a result of this long collaboration and the experience they have gained along the way, and their continued engagement with evolving architectural ideas and colleagues in the profession. They are grateful as well for the assistance they have received from the many talented young architects who have spent time in the office and contributed to their work.

During the early 1980s, upon the completion of their Masters of Architecture degrees from Princeton University, Juliet and Terry worked at Michael Graves’ office where they had the privilege of working closely with Mr. Graves on some of his most important work at that time. They also assumed teaching positions at Princeton University in the School of Architecture. And in 1986 they formed their office, Richardson Smith Architects, located at 40 Witherspoon Street in downtown Princeton across from the main gates to the University.

The work produced by the office is diverse. The portfolio includes projects of all types and sizes, ranging from residential work, to restaurants and commercial space, to projects for corporate, health care, educational and religious institutions. Juliet and Terry’s interests in good design, whether large or small, extend well beyond what could be considered the scope for architecture. They are heavily involved in the landscape design for their projects, and for many of their projects, they design custom millwork and furniture to compliment the space. Outside of the office, Juliet and Terry have offered their services to locally based programs that support the quality of life and future of the Princeton community.

Richardson Smith Architects provide a full range of professional services that can be tailored to meet any project demand or requirement. The partners work closely with their clients to carefully establish initial design criteria, develop schedules and budgets, and manage all aspects of work from the design process, project coordination, and construction documentation to field administration. The office is also fully engaged with and supports sustainable design and green building strategies. RSA is a member of the US Green Building Council and has LEED certified design professionals involved in all phases of project planning, design and implementation
